You may not have even heard about this one, but I don’t know about you, but I just can’t seem to get a handle on the fact that there’s something I’m doing that can be considered effective. The idea of self-awareness is something that I think I’ve only really begun to grasp, and I’ve been reading a ton of articles on it lately.
I’m not sure if I’ve ever actually said this, but I’ll tell you what it is. I think we’re all on autopilot. We’re all basically automatons, with only a few of us getting really creative and thinking differently. But instead of taking the time to think about our actions, we just run them. It’s actually kind of a bizarro world version of a self-awareness thing.
Im not exactly sure what we mean. I think we mean that we have all been on autopilot all our lives. Most of us have been in this life for less than a year.
Well, I think it’s because as a society we’ve become so automatized that we forget that we are, in fact, a living organism. Our bodies are nothing more than a living machine. Our thoughts and actions are all just a pre-determined response to our environment.
Think about that for a second. It takes a little while for our brains to adjust to the absence of our own bodies. And it takes a long time for our bodies to adjust to the presence of us. But even though we have all been on autopilot, we have not adjusted to the lack of our bodies. We have not adjusted to the fact that we are not doing anything. We have not adjusted to the fact that we are living in a world that is not ours.
So while we might think that our lives are pre-determined, they really aren’t. Our lives are a series of actions that we make to adapt to the world around us. In a way, what we do and how we do it is just a pre-determined response to the world around us.
The problem with this view is that it is not true. Our actions, habits, routines, impulses, and reactions are simply an attempt to adapt to the world around us. What we do in the present moment is the response to the entire environment around us.
For example, we can be doing something, but we don’t really realize that we are doing it until it is no longer in the present moment. We may have been thinking about something, but we are just reacting to the environment in the present moment, rather than thinking about something else. What is true is that our actions are not pre-determined. In reality, we are pre-determined to act in certain ways in certain situations.
The only way we can truly be in the present moment and not be doing something else is if we are using the present moment to remind ourselves to do something else. The only thing we can really know for sure is what is in the present moment and what is happening around us.
This reminds me of the old Zen koan in which a student is asked why he is doing what he is doing. He replies, “I’m fishing.” The answer is that, like any action, our actions are not pre-determined. They are simply a moment in time.
